Depression & Anxiety

Depression and/or Anxiety is/are incredibly common. There is a lot you can do to help yourself, but this should not delay you seeking help if you feel suicidal.

St Johns wort is a natural herb that can help in mild to moderate depression, but interacts negatively with a lot of medicines including the contraceptive pill so check with your pharmacist first. Bracknell library makes available free mental health books including “Overcoming Depression” from Paul Gilbert or “Overcoming Anxiety” from Helen Kennerly. If you have nobody to talk to try the Samaritans helpline 08457 909090.

Assess the severity of your condition with the PHQ-9 assessment score:

There is also good advice available on the NHS Choices and Patient.co.uk websites.

If you are feeling suicidal or your depression is severe it is important to tell somebody urgently. Please, call your GP for an urgent appointment or call 111. Otherwise, and particularly where you wish to try non-medical treatments first, call Talking Therapies, the local NHS counselling service, on 0300 365 2000. Or text “talk” to 07500 915968.
