Wind & Bloating

Wind can be helped by peppermint oil capsules or sometimes even a regular cup of peppermint tea. Wind can be due to your diet and dietary changes can improve things. However, as (raw) vegetables (are) very healthy and can be the cause of wind, there is a trade off between benefit and inconvenience. Fizzy drinks and swallowing air (talking when eating) can cause wind as well. Finally, try to cut out wheat / dairy from your diet and see if it improves things. Constipation can cause wind. Sometimes wind can be due to a bug called helicobacter pylori (common in smokers) and there are self testing kits available online.

Very rarely wind is a cause for concern and when there is a concern there are usually associated symptoms. Problems with bloating are often due to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (a common condition of the gut that causes bouts of stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation), or a bug called helicobacter pylori. If you have purchased a self test for helicobacter and it is positive, take the results and go to your doctor to receive treatment. Furthermore, be aware that constant bloating very occasionally can also be an early sign of ovarian cancer, which can be ruled out with some simple tests by your doctor. However, if you have been bloated for years, ovarian cancer is unlikely to be the cause.
